Archival Overview
Canada's resolute wartime Prime Minister during World War I who mobilized 600,000 troops, established the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and asserted Canada's international sovereign independence at Versailles.
Biographical Record
A Halifax barrister, Borden led the Conservative Party to victory in 1911 on an anti-reciprocity platform. When war erupted in August 1914, Borden oversaw Canada's massive industrial and military mobilization, visiting front-line trenches and demanding equal partnership in imperial decision-making.
Borden introduced federal income tax as a wartime measure and pushed through the controversial Military Service Act in 1917. At the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, he insisted that Canada sign the Treaty of Versailles independently and secure a separate seat in the League of Nations.
