Archival Overview
Nigeria's first self-made multimillionaire and transport titan who established Ojukwu Transport, chaired the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and financed West African commerce.
Biographical Record
Sir Louis Philippe Odumegwu Ojukwu was born in 1909 in Nnewi, Anambra State. Starting work as an entry-level tyre sales clerk for John Holt in Lagos, his keen commercial foresight and extraordinary organizational discipline led him to establish Ojukwu Transport Company in 1937 with a single second-hand Bedford truck.
During World War II, Ojukwu's fleet transported vital war supplies, tin ore, and groundnuts across Nigeria. He expanded into real estate, equity banking, and shipping, becoming the founding Chairman of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Chairman of the African Continental Bank, and director of major multinationals. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1960, his legendary financial acumen made him Nigeria's first internationally recognized commercial magnate.
