Archival Overview

Brilliant jurist and prime minister who authored the first Canadian Criminal Code in 1892, modernized maritime fisheries treaties, and died suddenly at Windsor Castle at the peak of his career.

Biographical Record

Thompson was a brilliant legal scholar who rose from stenographer to Premier of Nova Scotia and Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court before Sir John A. Macdonald recruited him to Ottawa as Minister of Justice in 1885. His crowning achievement was codifying the Canadian Criminal Code in 1892.

Appointed Prime Minister in 1892, Thompson brought formidable administrative efficiency to the nation. Minutes after being sworn into Queen Victoria's Privy Council at Windsor Castle in December 1894, he suffered a fatal heart attack at age forty-nine, returned to Halifax on a British warship draped in black.
