Archival Overview
Fur trader of mixed African and Scottish heritage who rose to Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company and served as the founding Governor of British Columbia during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush.
Biographical Record
Born in Demerara to a Scottish merchant and a free Creole woman of color, Douglas rose through the fur trade hierarchy with exceptional executive discipline. In 1843, he established Fort Victoria on southern Vancouver Island as the new Pacific headquarters.
When tens of thousands of American prospectors flooded the Fraser River in the 1858 Gold Rush, Douglas acted decisively to assert British crown sovereignty, enforce law and order, and prevent American annexation, earning him veneration as the Father of British Columbia.
