Archival Overview
Greatest field commander of Sultan Yusuf ibn Tashfin, whose military campaigns unified fractured Taifa kingdoms and captured Seville, Cordoba, and Badajoz in 1091.
Biographical Record
Sir ibn Abi Bakr was the chief general of the Almoravid imperial army and the right-hand military commander to Sultan Yusuf ibn Tashfin. At the historic Battle of Sagrajas (Zallaqa) in 1086, he commanded the left wing that broke King Alfonso VI's Castilian heavy cavalry.
In 1090–1091, when the squabbling Taifa kings jeopardized Muslim Spain, Yusuf appointed General Sir to lead the Almoravid army of annexation. Through disciplined siegecraft and tactical brilliance, he captured Seville, Cordoba, and Badajoz, establishing unified Moroccan-Andalusian rule for over half a century.
