Biographical Record
A former rebel in the 1837 uprising who famously fought at Saint-Denis, Cartier evolved into one of the most brilliant constitutional statesmen in Canadian history. As leader of the Bleus, he formed an indispensable partnership with John A. Macdonald.
Cartier convinced French Canadians that Confederation provided the best guarantee for their Catholic religion, civil law, and cultural autonomy through provincial powers. As Minister of Militia, he drafted the Militia Act, brought British Columbia into Canada with the promise of a transcontinental railway, and negotiated the transfer of the vast North-West.
