Biographical Record

Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (1919–2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, Antarctic explorer, and beloved humanitarian. On May 29, 1953, Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay made history as the first confirmed climbers to stand upon the summit of Mount Everest (8,848 m), the highest point on Earth.

Hillary later reached the South Pole overland in 1958 as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Devoting much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, he built schools, hospitals, and airfields across the Solukhumbu region.
