Archival Overview
Prime Minister (Katikkiro) of Buganda for thirty-seven years (1890–1926) and pioneering historian whose 'Basekabaka be Buganda' codified the royal history of the Baganda kingdom.
Biographical Record
Apolo Kagwa was born in 1864 in Busabala, Buganda. Rising through the royal court as a page, his decisive military leadership during the religious wars led to his appointment as Katikkiro (Prime Minister) in 1890.
As senior regent during the minority of Kabaka Daudi Chwa II, Kagwa negotiated the foundational 1900 Buganda Agreement with Sir Harry Johnston, securing Mailo freehold land rights and internal legislative autonomy for the kingdom. A pioneering scholar, Kagwa authored Basekabaka be Buganda (1901), the definitive historical chronicle of the kings of Buganda from Kintu onwards, followed by seminal ethnological works on Baganda customs and clans. He was knighted (KCMG) in 1905.
