Archival Overview
Abbasid chief physician who pioneered mobile medical clinics, state licensure examinations for doctors, and public health hospitals in Iraq.
Biographical Record
Sinan ibn Thabit was a transformative physician and health administrator under Caliphs al-Muqtadir and al-Qahir. Following in the footsteps of his father Thabit ibn Qurra, Sinan combined profound medical knowledge with visionary civic administrative competence. Appointed chief of the Abbasid medical services, he instituted mandatory qualification examinations for all practicing physicians in Baghdad.
Recognizing the plight of rural populations and prisoners, Sinan created the world's earliest state-supported mobile medical units, dispatching physicians, supplies, and pharmacies into distant villages and military camps. His humanitarian reforms established medical care as a fundamental public duty of civilized governance.
