Archival Overview
North African Jewish pilgrim from Cyrene recorded in the three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) who was compelled by Roman soldiers to carry the cross of Jesus Christ to Golgotha.
Biographical Record
Simon belonged to the large, prosperous Jewish diaspora of Cyrene in eastern Libya. Having traveled over a thousand miles on pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Passover festival, he was entering the city gates when Roman legionaries compelled him to take up the heavy wooden crossbeam (*patibulum*) of the condemned Jesus of Nazareth.
His sons, Alexander and Rufus, are noted by name in the Gospel of Mark (15:21) as prominent figures in the early Christian community of Antioch and Rome. In 1941, an ancient ossuary tomb bearing the inscription 'Alexander son of Simon of Cyrene' was discovered in the Kidron Valley of Jerusalem.
