Archival Overview

Congolese Baptist catechist who began a miraculous healing ministry at Nkamba in 1921. Imprisoned for thirty years by Belgian colonial authorities, his steadfast non-violence inspired the Kimbanguist Church of millions.

Biographical Record

On April 6, 1921, Simon Kimbangu touched a dying woman in the village of Nkamba, restoring her to life in the name of Jesus Christ. Tens of thousands of workers abandoned colonial plantations to hear his sermons of peace, abstinence from alcohol, and divine liberation of the Black continent.

Sentenced to death by a Belgian military tribunal after only five months of public ministry, his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by King Albert I. Spending thirty continuous years in solitary confinement in Lubumbashi without bitterness, he remains Africa's longest-held prisoner of conscience.
