Archival Overview

5th-century Christian King of the Nobatae who established the medieval Kingdom of Nobatia and inscribed his legendary Greek triumphal inscription at the Temple of Kalabsha.

Biographical Record

King Silko united the post-Meroitic Nubian tribes between the First and Third Cataracts of the Nile, adopting Greek as the official court and diplomatic language. In three major campaigns, he crushed the nomadic Blemmyes (Beja) invaders.

To celebrate his victories, he had an epic Greek triumphal inscription carved on the walls of the Temple of Mandulis at Kalabsha, proudly declaring: 'I am Silko, Kinglet of the Nobatae and of all the Ethiopians... I conquered them from Primis to Telmis.'
