Biographical Record
Sigrid Undset was born on May 20, 1882, in Kalundborg, Denmark, and raised in Christiania. The daughter of prominent archaeologist Ingvald Undset, she absorbed a deep love for history and medieval Scandinavian antiquities from her childhood.
After early contemporary novels focusing on working women like Jenny (1911), Undset published her monumental medieval trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter (1920–1922), followed by the tetralogy The Master of Hestviken. Her vivid narrative realism and spiritual depth earned her the 1928 Nobel Prize in Literature. Forced into exile during the Nazi occupation of Norway, she campaigned actively in the United States for the Allied war effort from her base in New York.
