Revered 19th-century Quranic educator who established the famous Zawiya of Sidi Zouine, which became Morocco's premier academy for the memorization and transmission of the Ten Quranic Recitations.

Biographical Record

Sidi Zouine (Muhammad ibn Ali al-Zouine) was renowned across Morocco for his unmatched mastery of Quranic orthography (Rasm) and recitation variants (Qira'at). In the Haouz plains west of Marrakech, he founded a specialized religious academy dedicated entirely to Quranic memorization.

His madrasa trained thousands of Moroccan huffaz (reciters) who went on to lead prayers and teach throughout North Africa and West Africa. The Zawiya Sidi Zouine remains an active national sanctuary of Quranic scholarship to this day.
