Archival Overview
Enduring symbol of spiritual patience and detachment, a Sufi mystic afflicted with leprosy who lived in a cave outside Marrakech's walls, honored as one of the Seven Saints of Marrakech.
Biographical Record
Sidi Youssef Ben Ali was born in Marrakech of Sanhaja Berber lineage. Educated in Quranic disciplines, he was struck in youth by debilitating leprosy. Ostracized by fearful townsfolk and cast outside the city walls, he inhabited a small cave near Bab Aghmat.
Rather than despairing, Youssef spent his decades in perpetual prayer, serene gratitude, and contemplation, earning the title 'Dhu al-Kifl' (the Patient). Common folk, scholars, and dignitaries flocked to his cave seeking spiritual counsel and blessings. He remains the second patron saint visited during the traditional pilgrimage of the Seven Saints of Marrakech.
