Biographical Record
Educated in mathematics in Dakar and economics in Paris, Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi served as Minister of Planning and director of international development funds in Kuwait before winning Mauritania's first fully democratic, transparent presidential election in March 2007.
During his presidency, he courageously confronted historical national wounds, orchestrating the return of 25,000 Afro-Mauritanian refugees from Senegal, criminalizing slavery under strict penal law, and promoting reconciliation before being deposed in an August 2008 military coup, remaining a symbol of democratic integrity.
