Biographical Record
Sidi M'hamed Ben Aouda was born in the Mina river basin in western Algeria in 1515. Renowned from youth for his deep piety, asceticism, and mastery of Maliki law and Quranic sciences, he dedicated his life to reconciling feuding tribes across the Oranie and Dahra regions.
Ben Aouda established an influential zawiya that served as an educational hub, hospital, and peaceful sanctuary. To this day, his memory is celebrated in the grand annual 'Waada of Sidi M'hamed Ben Aouda', one of the largest cultural and equestrian gatherings in North Africa, celebrating Berber-Arab unity and traditional fantasia horsemanship.
