Biographical Record
Muhammad ibn Isa al-Mukhtari was born near Meknes into an honorable Idrisid lineage. Studying in Fez under disciples of Imam al-Jazuli, he returned to Meknes to establish a grand zawiya that became a magnet for hundreds of thousands of spiritual seekers from across North Africa.
His Aissawa order became celebrated for its profound rhythmic litanies (Dhikr), spiritual trance (Hadra), and virtuoso use of the oboe (ghaita) and large frame drums (tbel). The annual Moussem of Cheikh El Kamel during the Mawlid remains one of the largest popular spiritual gatherings in the Maghreb.
