Archival Overview
Supreme patron saint of Tunis whose moral courage, theological erudition, and protection of the Jewish community within the medina earned him the eternal title 'Sultan of the Medina'.
Biographical Record
Mahrez ibn Khalaf was born in Ariana to a family of Arab lineage. Educated in Kairouan, he established a zawiya in the Bab Souika district of Tunis, teaching Maliki jurisprudence and organizing mutual aid for the poor during the turbulent Zirid-Fatimid era.
Sidi Mahrez is revered for his visionary tolerance: he successfully intervened with the Zirid sovereign to grant Jewish citizens the legal right to settle safely inside the city walls in the Hara quarter, ensuring their protection. His magnificent Ottoman-domed mosque remains the spiritual heart of the Medina of Tunis.
