Biographical Record
Sidi Lakhdar Ben Khlouf is celebrated as the undisputed patriarch of Algerian popular Melhoun poetry and one of the nation's most venerated spiritual figures. Born into the Maghraoua Berber tribe in the rugged Dahra mountains near Mostaganem, he was an accomplished Sufi master, mystic, and heroic defender of his homeland.
In August 1558, Ben Khlouf took up arms alongside Ottoman-Algerian forces to crush the invading Spanish army commanded by the Count of Alcaudete at the epic Battle of Mazagran. His sweeping poetic masterpiece 'Qasidat Mazagran' provides a vivid, firsthand verse chronicle of the battle, while his prophetic and mystical poems remain sung by Chaabi and Bedouin musicians to this day.
