Archival Overview
Revered 13th-century Sufi master and spiritual lookout who established his hermitage atop the cliffs of Djebel Menara, giving his name to the world-famous blue-and-white clifftop village.
Biographical Record
Abu Said Khalaf ibn Yahya al-Tamimi al-Baji studied in Tunis and traveled to the East before retreating to the high cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Tunis and the ancient ruins of Carthage. He spent decades in contemplation, prayer, and watching for maritime corsair threats.
A close friend of Abu Madyan and teacher of Saint Lalla Manoubia, Sidi Bou Said emphasized interior purification, charity, and detachment from worldly vanity. Following his death in 1231, his hillside sanctuary grew into the iconic village of Sidi Bou Said, world-renowned for its whitewashed walls, azure doorways, and artistic soul.
