Sidi Belyout is the supreme spiritual protector and historical patron saint of the economic capital of Morocco, Casablanca. Living during the eighteenth century amidst the rebuilding of the city by Sultan Mohammed III after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, he was renowned for extraordinary asceticism and harmony with nature.
According to enduring urban folklore, wild animals and Barbary lions from the neighboring forest of Bouskoura guarded his outdoor prayers without harming him. His white-domed mausoleum near the port remains a bustling pilgrimage center, and the entire downtown administrative district of Sidi Belyout proudly bears his name.
