"Being is actualized through generosity; he who gives to others opens the gates of divine grace."

Archival Overview

Revered Sufi master from Ceuta who settled in Marrakech under the Almohad caliphs, formulated the famous spiritual philosophy of charity, and became the paramount patron saint among the Seven Saints of Marrakech.

Biographical Record

Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Khazraji al-Sebti (1129–1204) studied in Ceuta before moving to Marrakech in 1145 during the Almohad conquest under Abd al-Mu'min. Choosing to live among the blind, lepers, and destitute outside the city walls on the hill of Gueliz, he dedicated his life to an uncompromising doctrine of universal charity.

Sidi Bel Abbes formulated his famous metaphysical axiom: 'Being is actualized through generosity' (Wujud al-khayr fi al-i'ta'). He taught that divine favor is inextricably tied to giving to those in need, refusing to eat until he had found someone hungry to share his meal. Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur revered him, building his zawiya inside the city walls. Philosopher Averroes admired his profound intuition.
