Archival Overview
Visionary 19th-century Sufi saint, prophet-craftsman, and master blacksmith of Kairouan who constructed the spectacular Mosque of the Sabres with its colossal iron swords and six fluted domes.
Biographical Record
Amor Abada was an eccentric and spiritually charismatic blacksmith in the holy city of Kairouan. Revered by Husainid beys including Mustafa Bey and Ahmad I Bey, who believed his forge possessed mystical power, he used his royal stipends to construct an extraordinary mosque complex.
Known as the 'Mosque of the Sabres' (Zawiya Sidi Amor Abada), the sanctuary is famous for its six white ribbed domes and the gigantic iron anchors, wooden pipes, and monumental engraved swords forged by Abada to symbolize the defense of Islam and the spiritual mastery over base matter.
