Archival Overview
Revered 13th-century Sufi saint and contemporary of Abu Said al-Baji and Lalla Manoubia, who earned his living as a humble woodcutter (al-Hattab) in the hills west of Tunis.
Biographical Record
Sidi Ali al-Hattab was one of the spiritual luminaries of medieval Tunis during the Hafsid era. Emulating prophetic humility, he refused donations and earned his daily bread by gathering firewood in the surrounding forests and selling it in the souks of Tunis to feed the poor.
His zawiya at El Batan near Manouba remains one of the most visited spiritual shrines in northern Tunisia, celebrated in popular folklore, malouf songs, and regional festivals.
