Archival Overview

Algerian-born Islamic scholar and spiritual master who founded the Tijaniyya Sufi order at Ain Madhi in 1781, settling in Fez where his zawiya became the spiritual epicenter for millions across West and North Africa.

Biographical Record

Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tijani (1737–1815) was born in the desert oasis of Ain Madhi in southern Algeria. Memorizing the Quran at age seven, he studied in Fez, Tlemcen, Tunis, Cairo, and Mecca, receiving spiritual authorization from multiple classical Sufi lineages.

In 1781, at the oasis of Boussemghoun near El Bayadh, Tijani experienced a transformative spiritual vision directing him to establish the Tijaniyya order, emphasizing regular litanies (Wazifa), gratitude, and public civic engagement. Moving to Fez in 1798 under the protection of Sultan Moulay Slimane, he established the Grand Zawiya of Fez. The Tijaniyya expanded rapidly, becoming the dominant spiritual fraternity of West Africa, Senegal, Mali, and Nigeria.
