Archival Overview
First Prime Minister of independent Morocco (1955–1958) who signed the historic Declaration of Independence with France, decorated WWII officer who lost a leg in combat, and fierce royalist loyalist.
Biographical Record
Mbarek Bekkaï was born in Berkane in eastern Morocco. A graduate of the Dar El Beida military academy in Meknes, he served with distinction as a Moroccan Goumier officer during World War II, losing a leg in the defense of France in 1940 and receiving the Legion of Honor.
Appointed Pasha of Sefrou in 1943, Bekkaï famously resigned in 1953 in protest when French authorities deposed and exiled Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Youssef (King Mohammed V). Upon the King's triumphant return in 1955, Bekkaï was appointed Morocco's first Prime Minister, skillfully presiding over the government that negotiated and signed the Moroccan Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1956.
