Biographical Record
Abu Zayd Abderrahmane ibn Makhlouf et-Thaâlibi (1384–1479) was born near the Isser river east of Algiers. He traveled for over fifteen years in pursuit of sacred knowledge, studying in Tunis at Al-Zaytouna, in Cairo at Al-Azhar, and in Mecca, Medina, and Bursa, mastering hadith, exegesis, and legal sciences under the greatest scholars of his era.
Returning to Algiers, he founded a famous madrasa and authored over ninety books, most famously his monumental multi-volume Quranic exegesis Al-Jawahir al-Hisan fi Tafsir al-Qur'an (The Fine Pearls in Quranic Interpretation). Thaâlibi's white-domed mausoleum in the Casbah of Algiers has stood for five centuries as the spiritual beating heart of the city.
