Archival Overview
The immortal wandering bard of the Berber language whose spoken 'isefra' (philosophical stanzas) gave voice to the tragedy of colonial land dispossession and the enduring pride of the Kabyle spirit.
Biographical Record
Si Mohand was born into an honorable maraboutic family in Greater Kabylie. Following the brutal crushing of the 1871 Mokrani Insurrection, his ancestral village was razed by French colonial troops, his father executed, and his family dispersed into exile across North Africa and New Caledonia.
Refusing to submit to colonial order, Si Mohand took a solemn vow never to sleep under the same roof for two consecutive nights. For over thirty years, he wandered the mountain trails and towns of Algeria, improvising sublime 9-line 'isefra' poems that addressed fate, unrequited love, human dignity, and rebellion against injustice, orally memorized by millions.
