Archival Overview

Grand Vizier and Minister of Foreign Affairs (Wazir al-Bahr) who led Moroccan diplomacy during the existential crises of the Madrid Conference and Algeciras Conference (1906).

Biographical Record

Si Feddoul Gharnit descended from a prominent Andalusian family in Fez. Serving under Sultans Hassan I, Abd al-Aziz, and Abd al-Hafid, he held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs (Wazir al-Bahr) for over two decades before becoming Grand Vizier.

A master of classical Moroccan diplomatic decorum, Gharnit represented the Makhzen during the fateful negotiations with the European powers, tirelessly asserting Moroccan sovereignty and territorial integrity against French, Spanish, and German colonial ambitions.
