Archival Overview
Pioneering Algerian scholar, teacher, and ethnographer who published foundational studies on Kabyle linguistics, oral poetry of Si Mohand, and the ancient history of the Berber nation.
Biographical Record
Si Amar ou Said Boulifa was born into a peasant family in the village of Adeni in Greater Kabylie. Overcoming colonial educational barriers, he qualified as an instructor and was appointed professor of Berber languages at the prestigious École Supérieure des Lettres in Algiers.
Boulifa recognized the urgent necessity of recording endangered indigenous Berber oral traditions. In 1904, he published 'Recueil de poésies kabyles', immortalizing the poetry of Si Mohand, followed by 'Le Djurdjura à travers l'histoire' in 1925, the first modern scientific history written from an authentic Berber perspective.
