Biographical Record

Shunryu Suzuki (1904–1971 CE) was abbot of Rinso-in in Japan when he moved to San Francisco to minister to Japanese immigrants, soon attracting American countercultural youth.

His quiet, humorous instruction in zazen sitting led to the founding of Tassajara (the first Zen training monastery outside Asia) and his timeless book Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind.
