Archival Overview

Legendary Indian warrior king who founded the Maratha Empire, pioneered guerrilla warfare (Ganimi Kava), built naval fortresses establishing the Indian Navy, and was crowned Chhatrapati in 1674.

Biographical Record

Shivaji Bhonsle (1630–1680) began carving out an independent realm at sixteen, capturing hill forts across the Western Ghats from the Bijapur Sultanate and the Mughal Empire. In 1659, at the Battle of Pratapgad, he famously killed the towering Bijapuri general Afzal Khan using concealed tiger claws (bagh nakh).

Shivaji pioneered 'Ganimi Kava'—lightning guerrilla strikes utilizing rugged mountain terrain. He built coastal naval forts (Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg), earning acclaim as the Father of the Indian Navy. On June 6, 1674, he was crowned Chhatrapati ('Paramount Sovereign') at Raigad, establishing Hindavi Swarajya (self-rule) with strict codes protecting civilians and women.
