Archival Overview

Song Dynasty universal polymath whose Dream Pool Essays described the magnetic needle compass (magnetic declination), petrified bamboo fossils (geomorphology), and movable type printing.

Biographical Record

Shen Kuo (1031–1095 CE) was an intellectual titan of the Northern Song Dynasty who served as head of the Astronomical Bureau, Chancellor of the Hanlin Academy, and imperial military inspector. Retiring to his estate, 'Dream Brook' in Zhenjiang, he compiled his masterpiece, the Dream Pool Essays (*Mengxi Bitan*).

Shen Kuo was the first person in history to describe the magnetic needle compass for navigation and discovered magnetic declination (that a compass points toward the magnetic north pole rather than true geographic north). He pioneered geomorphology by deducing that marine fossils in the Taihang Mountains proved the sea had once covered inland China, and recorded Bi Sheng's invention of movable type printing.
