Biographical Record
Of mixed Han, Miao, and Tujia descent, Shen Congwen (1902–1988) joined local Hunan militias at fourteen before arriving penniless in Beijing to write. His 1934 masterpiece 'Bian Cheng' ('Border Town') painted a serene, moral portrait of the ferry girl Cuicui in western Hunan, far from coastal political strife.
Silenced as a fiction writer after 1949, Shen turned his extraordinary visual memory to historical archaeology at the National Museum of Chinese History, publishing the definitive two-volume study on ancient Chinese costumes. He was shortlisted for the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature.
