Archival Overview
Visionary Ruler of Dubai (1958-1990) and co-founder of the UAE who dredged Dubai Creek and built Port Rashid and Jebel Ali, fathering modern Dubai.
Biographical Record
Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum was born in the historic Al Shindagha district of Dubai and succeeded his father as Ruler in 1958. Recognizing that Dubai's future lay in global commerce and trade rather than relying solely on modest oil reserves, he embarked on bold infrastructure projects that astounded international financiers.
In 1959, Rashid borrowed funds to dredge Dubai Creek, allowing deep-water shipping, followed by building Port Rashid, the Dubai World Trade Centre (then the Middle East's tallest building), and Jebel Ali Port, the world's largest man-made harbor. Alongside Sheikh Zayed, he was the essential co-founder of the UAE in 1971, laying the foundational blueprint for modern Dubai's global rise.
