Biographical Record
Sheikh Muhammad Mustafa Ma al-'Aynayn (1830–1910) was an extraordinary polymath and spiritual head of the Fadhiliyya Sufi order. In 1898, he founded the stone fortress-city of Smara in the Western Sahara, establishing a magnificent library, printing press, and center of Islamic learning.
Recognized by Moroccan Sultans Moulay Hassan and Moulay Abdelaziz as their spiritual representative in the Sahara, Ma al-'Aynayn mobilized camel-mounted warrior confederations across Mauritania, Senegal, and southern Morocco to combat French colonial conquest, leading an unyielding resistance until his death in Tiznit.
