Biographical Record
Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari was born on February 25, 1925, in the northern village of Shagari, Sokoto State. Educated at Kaduna College, he worked for years as a dedicated science and Arabic teacher. Holding the aristocratic title Turakin Sokoto, he was elected to the federal House of Representatives in 1954 and served continuously in seven cabinet ministries under Balewa and Gowon, including Economic Development, Internal Affairs, and Finance.
In 1979, Shagari was elected President on the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) platform, marking Nigeria's historic transition from military rule to constitutional democracy. His administration launched the Green Revolution agricultural policy, expanded steel production at Ajaokuta, and built extensive low-cost housing schemes. Overthrown in the December 1983 military coup, he spent his remaining decades as a respected elder statesman.
