Archival Overview

Second Sasanian King of Kings who consolidated the Persian Empire, defeated three Roman emperors in battle (slaying Gordian III, extracting tribute from Philip the Arab, and capturing Emperor Valerian alive), and founded Gundeshapur academy.

Biographical Record

Succeeding his father Ardashir I, Shapur I declared himself "King of Kings of Iran and Aniran" (Non-Iran). His epic rock reliefs carved into the cliffs of Naqsh-e Rustam and Bishapur depict Roman Emperor Valerian kneeling in surrender—an event that sent shockwaves through the ancient world.

A tolerant and visionary sovereign, he welcomed diverse communities, patronized Mani in his court, and used captured Roman engineers and artisans to erect the monumental bridge-dam of Shushtar and the cosmopolitan university of Gundeshapur.
