Archival Overview

Nalanda monk and Bodhisattva whose 'Bodhicaryavatara' (The Way of the Bodhisattva) is the supreme poetic masterpiece on generating Bodhicitta and exchanging self for others.

Biographical Record

Shantideva (c. 685–763 CE) was a prince who fled his coronation to become a simple monk at Nalanda, mockingly nicknamed 'Bhusuku' (one who only eats, sleeps, and sits).

Challenged to recite scripture before the university faculty, he levitated into the air while reciting the Bodhicaryavatara, presenting the immortal practice of Tonglen and dedication of merit.
