Archival Overview
Legendary wandering Persian mystic whose transformative spiritual friendship with Jalal al-Din Rumi ignited the Mathnawi and modern Sufism.
Biographical Record
Shams al-Din Mohammad ibn Ali ibn Malik-Dad Tabrizi was a wandering dervish and spiritual visionary from Tabriz who traveled across the Middle East seeking a disciple whose spiritual capacity matched his burning divine love. In late November 1244, he arrived in Konya, Turkey, and encountered the celebrated Muslim jurist and theologian Jalal al-Din Rumi.
Their meeting was an explosive spiritual catalyst that transformed Rumi from a conventional scholarly jurist into an ecstatic mystic poet. Shams's profound conversational discourses, recorded by disciples in the Maqalat-e Shams-e Tabrizi, shattered intellectual dogmatism, emphasizing that true divine union is found only through radical ego-annihilation and boundless love.
