Profound Iraqi painter, calligrapher, and theorist who founded the One Dimension Group, blending Islamic mysticism and the Arabic letter.
Biographical Record
Shakir Hassan Al Said was born in Samawah and graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad before training at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1951, he co-authored the Baghdad Modern Art Group manifesto with Jawad Saleem, advocating for an authentic national art rooted in Iraqi heritage.
In 1971, Al Said founded the One Dimension Group (Jama'at al-Bu'd al-Wahid), creating a revolutionary spiritual aesthetic centered on the Arabic letter (hurufiyya) and the textures of weathered Baghdad walls. His mystical philosophy regarded the canvas as a metaphysical surface where time, decay, and transcendence converge.
