Archival Overview
Formidable Sultana of Egypt who held the realm together following the death of Sultan As-Salih Ayyub, orchestrating the crushing defeat of King Louis IX's Seventh Crusade at the Battle of Fariskur, and serving as the first monarch of the Mamluk era.
Biographical Record
Originally a Turkic bondmaid who became the beloved wife of Sultan As-Salih Ayyub, Shajar al-Durr concealed her husband's death during the Crusader invasion of 1249, issuing forged royal decrees and directing military operations with Mamluk commander Baybars.
After the capture of French King Louis IX, she was acclaimed Sultana by the army, having coins minted in her name and Friday prayers recited in her honor. Her brief, dramatic reign marked the momentous bridge between the Ayyubid and Mamluk dynasties.
