Archival Overview

Fifth Safavid Shah celebrated as the greatest ruler of the dynasty. Transformed Isfahan into "Half the World" (Esfahan Nesf-e Jahan), centralized Persian statehood, and created the immortal royal square of Naqsh-e Jahan.

Biographical Record

Assuming power amidst Ottoman and Uzbek invasions, Abbas modernized the Persian military using artillery and musket corps, expelling Portuguese forces from the Strait of Hormuz with English assistance. In 1598, he moved the imperial capital to Isfahan.

There he laid out the vast Naqsh-e Jahan Square, erecting the Shah Mosque (Masjed-e Abbasi), the Ali Qapu palace, and the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. He settled Armenian silk weavers in New Julfa, fostering a global mercantile empire.
