Archival Overview
Genius Egyptian film director, production designer, and costume creator whose 1969 masterpiece 'The Night of Counting the Years' (Al-Mummia) is universally recognized by film critics as one of the greatest Arab films ever made.
Biographical Record
Graduating in architecture from Victoria College and the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, Abdel Salam designed stunning costumes and sets for international epics including Joseph Mankiewicz's Cleopatra and Roberto Rossellini's films.
In 1969, he directed Al-Mummia, chronicling the 1881 discovery of the royal pharaonic cache at Deir el-Bahari with hypnotic visual pacing, operatic silence, and philosophical inquiry into national identity. The film was restored by Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project.
