Archival Overview
Distinguished Nineteenth Dynasty warrior-pharaoh and master builder who restored Egypt's imperial prestige across Syria and Canaan and commissioned the sublime Hypostyle Hall at Karnak and the Mortuary Temple at Abydos.
Biographical Record
Son of Ramesses I, Seti I re-established Egyptian sovereignty over Levant vassals, confronting the Hittite empire in northern Syria and securing vital trade routes through the Sinai. His military victories were commemorated in magnificent relief carvings at Karnak.
Seti's artistic patronages produced the highest aesthetic refinement of the Ramesside era, notably the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak and his mortuary temple at Abydos containing the Abydos King List. His tomb in the Valley of the Kings (KV17) is the longest and most exquisitely painted in the necropolis.
