Biographical Record
Sergei Winogradsky (1856–1953) studied under Heinrich Anton de Bary in Strasbourg. Working with sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (Beggiatoa), Winogradsky made the revolutionary discovery that living organisms can obtain energy entirely by oxidizing hydrogen sulfide to sulfur without photosynthesis, coining the term 'chemosynthesis'.
He invented the 'Winogradsky Column', an enclosed miniature ecosystem still used worldwide to culture stratified microbial communities. Isolating the obligate anaerobic nitrogen-fixing bacterium Clostridium pasteurianum, his discoveries proved that microscopic bacteria drive the Earth's nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon geochemical cycles.
