Biographical Record
Ahmed Sékou Touré (1922–1984), great-grandson of Emperor Samori Touré, rose through the postal workers' trade union to lead the General Confederation of Labor (CGTA). In the September 1958 constitutional referendum, Guinea was the only French African territory to vote 'Non' to French neo-colonial federation.
France retaliated by abruptly withdrawing all administrators, burning medical files, and cutting telephone wires; Touré mobilized national youth brigades, securing emergency financial backing from Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana. Touré turned Guinea into a bastion of African liberation, providing bases, passports, and heavy weapons to Amilcar Cabral's PAIGC and Nelson Mandela's ANC.
