Biographical Record

Sei Shonagon was the daughter of the celebrated scholar and poet Kiyohara no Motosuke. In the 990s, she entered the service of Empress Teishi (Sadako), where her dazzling wit, erudition, and poetic repartee made her one of the most celebrated figures in the Heian imperial court.

'The Pillow Book' is an incomparable compilation of personal reflections, court anecdotes, lists, and aesthetic observations categorized under headings like 'Hateful Things', 'Things That Make the Heart Beat Faster', and 'Pleasing Things'.
