Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633–1707) transformed siegecraft into an exact scientific discipline. Inventing parallel trenches and ricochet artillery fire, he minimized infantry casualties: "More powder, less blood."

He constructed or remodeled more than 300 fortresses across the frontiers of France—twelve of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites today. A compassionate humanist and economic reformer, his treatise La Dîme royale championed the French peasant class.
